In a vulnerable post on Tumblr, the multifaceted musician Halsey, who uses both she/her and they/them pronouns, shed light on the emotional toll that the negative criticism from their fans has taken on them.
Halsey, whose real name is Ashley Frangipane, wrote, “My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet.”
They continued, “Not speaking for all of you, of course. But it used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am.”
The singer continued to lament the lack of kindness, sympathy and basic human decency they have received throughout their career and stated that it has become difficult to engage with their fandom.
Frangipane’s recent health issues have only amplified the challenges they face. Last month, the singer revealed that they had been diagnosed with a range of medical conditions, which included systemic lupus erythematosus, a rare T-Cell lymphoproliferative disorder, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), Sjogren’s syndrome, and MAST cell activation syndrome. As the diagnoses have greatly impeded Frangipane’s mental and physical health, they admitted they had second thoughts about a return to music after her health scare.
The lyrics and video for Halsey’s latest single, “Lucky,” reflect the artist’s personal journey, with the singer openly acknowledging the physical and emotional struggles they have faced. The video shows Halsey receive medical treatment with a shaved head. “I shaved my head four times because I wanted to and then I did it one more time cause I got sick,” the lyrics reveal.
Frangipane said, “I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it.”
