So many actresses who have been working in Hollywood the past few decades have a Harvey Weinstein story, and Gwyneth Paltrow just recounted one of her most disturbing. It started with one man abusing his position of power, and it ended with another man using his position of power to protect her.

Paltrow was on Howard Stern‘s Sirius XM show this Wednesday, and she got into details regarding an unwelcome encounter she had with Weinstein around 20 years ago. The disgraced media mogul made a pass on her while they were alone in a hotel room. She managed to escape the situation, but she was worried about how this might affect her career, as she had signed on to make two films with Weinstein.

Paltrow told her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt what happened, and he became dead-set on taking action. When the three of them were all at the Broadway premiere of the latest version of Hamlet, Pitt confronted Weinstein, which Paltrow characterized as “the equivalent of throwing him against the wall.”

Afterward, Paltrow asked Pitt what happened, and she recalled, “He said, ‘If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you.’ Or something like that.”

Stern asked Paltrow if this sort of intense action-taking was the response that she was even looking for. She characterized it as “fantastic,” noting, “He leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame and power yet.”
