The nominations for the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. Leading the pack with this year’s nods are the George Clooney drama, The Descendents, the civil rights movement piece, The Help, and the black-and-white The Artist.

Clooney is also being honored for Best Actor for The Descendants, and he faces off against his Ides of March costar, Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for his role in that film. Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Michael Fassbender round out the category. The Best Actress race is also tight this year. Glenn Close, nominated for her role in Albert Knobs, goes up against fellow veterans Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton for The Iron Lady and We Need to Talk About Kevin, respectively, as well as Viola Davis for The Help and relative newcomer Rooney Mara for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

In the category for Best Comedy or Musical Motion Picture, The Artist will compete against the Kristen Wigg favorite, Bridesmaids, the Woody Allen flick, Midnight in Paris, the Marilyn Monroe biopic, My Week with Marilyn, and the Roman Polanski-helmed Carnage.

You can catch the Golden Globes, hosted for the third time by controversial comedian Ricky Gervais, live on Sunday, January 15 on NBC. The award is considered one of the highest honors for television and solidly foreshadows the upcoming Oscar race.
