Georges St-Pierre defeated Johny Hendricks in the UFC welterweight bout, defending his title for the ninth time in a row.
Georges St-Pierre Defends Title
The result on Saturday was a contentious one, with St-Pierre winning by split decision that some believe fell the wrong way. Among the more vocal dissenters of the result was UFC president Dana White, who believes that St-Pierre will be eager to book a rematch to attempt a cleaner win. "Georges knew he lost, his corner knew he lost,” said White. “Hendricks knew he won, and his corner knew they won."
St-Pierre and Hendricks' duked in out before a sold-out crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. When St-Pierre's victory was announced many of those in attendance booed. Two of the judges on the match scored the five-round title match 48-47 for St-Pierre, while the third judge scored it 48-47 in Hendricks favor.
Georges St-Pierre Talks Retirement
Following the split-decision victory, St-Pierre seemed to declare that he was stepping away from UFC. “There was a lot of talk about what was going to happen [after the fight,” St. Pierre said, taking the microphone. “I have a bunch of stuff in my life happening. I need to hang up my gloves for a bit.”
“I will make a point on that a little later,” continued St-Pierre, alluding to a future confirmation of his retirement. "But for right now, I’ve got to go away for a little bit.”
Hendricks received the news that he’d lost the fight was due surprise. He’d punished St-Pierre throughout the fight, issuing a number of injuries with his left hand. He also achieved a pair of takedowns. After raising his hands in victory at the conclusion of the fight, he fell to the ground once he heard the scores from the judges.
"I just want the belt. That UFC belt, right in front of me. That's the only thing pushing me, motivating me,” said Hendricks following the fight. “I don't care who has it or who doesn't. I need to get that. That's really my drive. I thought I got it tonight, but I guess I didn't."
With the win on Saturday, St-Pierre improves to a 12-match win streak, and his 19th victory overall in UFC.
