After months of waiting in anticipation since the full cast was announced at the event DC Fandome, the first official trailer for the DC Extended Universe movie The Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn was released. The film is a sequel as well as a soft reboot to the first Suicide Squad film directed by David Ayer from 2016. The only actors to return from the original movie are Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang. Unlike the first film, The Suicide Squad will be rated R.

The trailer opens with Flag, Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), the Thinker (Peter Capaldi), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) on a bus going to rescue Harley Quinn. Peacemaker criticizes Flag for risking the mission to save a “mental defective dressed as a court jester.” Bloodsport fires back by questioning how a guy who “wears a toilet seat on their head” would know any better. Flag breaks up the fight by stating that they don’t leave one of their own behind. As they get ready to break into a building and rescue Harley, they are shocked to find her greeting them from behind just as they are getting ready to scale the walls. A touched Harley offers to go back inside where they can just pretend rescue her before introducing herself to Bloodsport, who greets her in an annoyed fashion. The song “Dirty Work” by Steely Dan starts to play as several new members of the Suicide Squad are introduced, including Savant (Michael Rooker), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), TDK (Nathan Fillion), Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior) and Weasel (Sean Gunn). Waller explains that if they successfully complete their mission, she will remove ten years from their prison sentences and that if they fail to follow her orders in any way, she will kill them by detonating a bomb implanted in their necks.

The music starts to pick up as several action scenes are shown, including one that shows King Shark eating a man alive. When Waller asks if there are any questions, King Shark raises his hand to the dismissal of Waller, who sarcastically congratulates him for showing her his hand. An exasperated Bloodsport states that they are all gonna die to which Polka-Dot Man says that he hopes so, much to the former’s annoyance.

The preview cuts to Flag, Bloodsport and Harley interrogating the Thinker. Flag and Bloodsport state that if they fail the mission or if he gives them false information, he will die. Harley adds that if he has personalized license plates or if he coughs without covering his mouth, he will die. Flag denies Harley’s claims and pushes her to the side, before adding that it is definitely not an invitation to cough without covering his mouth. Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Ratcatcher and King Shark are all then seen walking through a beach at night. Peacemaker asks Bloodsport what the plan is. When Bloodsport replies that he has no plan, an outraged Peacemaker says that as the leader, he should be decisive, to which the former mockingly states that he should “go eat a bag of d**ks.” Peacemaker then retorts that of the whole beach was covered in “d**ks and he had to eat one in the name of freedom, he would have no problem. A confused Ratcatcher joins in by asking why the beach would have such a thing, to which Peacemaker claims that nobody can truly understand why mad men do what they do.

The music grows faster as more action scenes are shown before the villain Starro bursts out of the ground much to the team’s shock and confusion. One of the overseers of the team’s progress (Steve Agee) is horrified by Starro, calling him a Kaiju before cutting to the title card. The stinger of the trailer shows the final members of the group walking through a storm where Harley states that she loves the rain as it is like “angels are smooching all over them.”

The Suicide Squad will premiere on August 6 and will simultaneously be released in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service.
