Fetty Wap filmed the music video for his latest single at his old high school in New Jersey, which inadvertently resulted in the suspension of the high school’s principal.
Zatiti Moody, the principal of East Side High in Patterson, N.J., has been placed on leave after permitting alum Fetty Wap to film the music video for “Wake Up” in the school’s halls. Both the Paterson district education spokesman, Terry Corallo, and school governor, Kenneth Simmons, have spoken out against the video.
“I’m proud of Fetty Wap’s success. But as a parent and school board member, I think the video sends out the wrong message,” Simmons said, according NME. “To me, it glorifies dropping out of school and getting high.”
In the “Wake Up” video, there are multiple references to getting high – “Wiz Khalifa” high specifically – and becoming successful despite quitting high school. There is also a stripper who appears to be dancing on a poll inside the high school.
Despite the themes of the song and video, Fetty Wap (real name Willie Maxwell) maintains that he meant for it to be inspirational and aspirational to those passing through the same halls that he once did.
“I went back to my old high school because I love my city. I wanted to show the students of Paterson that someone who walked those same hallways they walk every day and sat in the same classrooms shown in the video has become successful,” the rapper said. “If I can do it they can do it too.”
