Disney announced the title and date for its upcoming live-action sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins on Wednesday.
The sequel is titled Mary Poppins Returns and will hit theaters on December, 28, 2018. The film stars Emily Blunt and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Disney earlier had reportedly considered a Christmas date for an “Untitled Disney Live Action #2.”
Blunt will play the role of the magical English nanny, and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack.
The film is set in Depression-era London, and follows an adult Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by Mary Poppins following a personal loss.
Mary uses her magical skills, and her friend Jack, to help the Banks family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
The sequel reunites Into the Woods director-producer Rob Marshall with Into the Woods musical producing team John DeLuca and Marc Platt.
David Magee is set to write the screenplay based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers.
Marc Shaiman will compose a new score and write original songs with Scott Wittman.
