‘On Your Feet!’ Theater Review: Gloria Estefan’s Life Makes For Rollicking Musical
3.5/5
Latin singer Gloria Estefan‘s life story gets the musical treatment in Broadway’s new production On Your Feet!, now playing at the Marquis Theater. Like the Carole King musical Beautiful, On Your Feet shows how the music industry transforms a young talented woman into an international sensation – an how that impacts her personal life.
‘On Your Feet!’ Theater Review
The show features winning performances by Anna Villafañe as Gloria and Josh Segarra as her mentor-turned-husband Emilio Estefan. The duo shows undeniable chemistry performing the Miami Sound Machine’s hit songs “Conga,” “Rhythm Is Going To Get You” and “I Don’t Want To Leave You Now” along with a score of original tunes for the show. As Gloria’s career takes off, her mom (Andrea Burns) voices her disapproval of her job choice and husband, leading to family friction. But when a bus accident imperils Gloria’s life and career, a sense of perspective is restored. Though the show may not be breaking new ground, On Your Feet, strongly directed by Jerry Mitchell, is a sure crowd pleaser. It’s at its best when the music is swinging and the cast is dancing in the aisles. And yes, the the whole audience is on their feet.
