FCC Receives Over 1,300 Complaints About Jennifer Lopez & Shakira’s Super Bowl Half Time Performance

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s racy performance at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance has caused an on-going controversy. The Federal Communications Commission received over 1,300 complaints according to the agency. 

“I applaud Shakira and Jennifer Lopez for being in amazing shape and having great voices, but that show was 100% about sex,” one football fan wrote to the FCC. 

The performance included a lot of skin, stripper poles, and two sets of hips that don’t lie. Although the performance was objectively impressive, many viewers fixated on the entertainers’ sensual dance moves and costume decisions and considered the content to be too explicit to be family-friendly. 

“I do not subscribe to The Playboy Channel, we do not buy porn for $20 a flick, we simply wanted to sit down as a family and watch the Super Bowl,” one audience member complained. “God forbid we expected to watch football and a quick concert but instead had our eyes molested.” 

Even Twisted Sister Dee Snider wrote in a Twitter post that Lopez and Shakira were too sexy for NFL’s intended audience.

Viewers have also complained that the performance has contributed to the unrealistic beauty expectations of older women. Writer Jennifer Weiner wrote in an article for the New York Times, “I can’t believe she’s 50 and looks so good… because I can’t believe she’s 50 and I look so bad!” 

Others have viewed the performance as a celebration of Latino pride during a heated political climate. In a Los Angeles Times interview, Lopez stated, “I think it’s super important for two Latina women to be headlining the Super Bowl. Especially right now in Trump’s America.” 

The FCC has declined to comment on the complaints in an email to the Daily News, but confirmed that they numbered more than 1,300.
