Fans Slam Adrien Brody For Tossing Gum At Partner Georgina Chapman Before Oscar Speech
Adrien Brody won his second Best Actor Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday night, but his celebratory moment was overshadowed by a bizarre act that left viewers stunned.
The 51-year-old actor, who won for his performance in The Brutalist, grew emotional as his name was announced, beating nominees Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan and Ralph Fiennes.
However, as Brody made his way up to the stage, he turned, removed his gum and threw it toward his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman, 48—Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife—who swiftly caught it before he continued his walk to the podium.
Social media erupted in response to the moment, with fans calling it “disgusting” and “disrespectful.” One viewer posted, “Adrien Brody THROWING his gum at Georgina Chapman while on the stairs to accept his award is honestly more shocking to me than Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.” Another added, “Adrien Brody’s wife just won the award for Best Supportive Significant Other, and her statuette is a wad of her husband’s chewed gum.”
Despite the backlash, Brody delivered a heartfelt speech about the significance of his win.
“Winning an award like this signifies a destination and something my character references in the film,” he said. “But to me, beyond the pinnacle of a career, it is a chance to begin again and the opportunity to hopefully be fortunate enough so that the next 20 years of my life, I can prove that I am worthy of such meaningful, important and relevant roles.”
Brody also thanked Chapman and the two children she shares with Weinstein, saying, “I know it’s been a rollercoaster. Thank you for accepting me into your life.” He revealed that the children refer to him as “Popsie.”
The 2025 Academy Awards aired live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and were hosted by Conan O’Brien.
