Fans Compare Sam Smith’s New Look To Harry Potter’s Severus Snape

Sam Smith, the 31-year-old singer known for their ever-evolving sense of style, turned heads again as they stepped out in New York in a flowing black cape.

While they strolled the streets, Smith was approached by Maurice Kamara, a popular TikToker known for conducting “fit checks” with passersby and celebrities. Maurice’s account, The People Gallery, has amassed over a million followers by capturing the fashion choices of individuals from Kim Kardashian to Willem Dafoe. In his latest video, Smith appeared and donned an all-black outfit.

Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, revealed that their high-necked cape was from designer Rick Owens. They paired it with towering platform heel boots and the popular Prada Cleo bag, a celebrity favorite selling for $3000. The singer mentioned that their current favorite designers are Rick Owens and Vivienne Westwood and expressed their newfound love for Westwood’s creations despite not considering them suitable for their style in the past.

When asked for a styling tip, Smith shared, “Every day, start again. That’s what I do personally.” They also revealed their favorite meal, anchovies with burrata, accompanied by a vodka martini.

While Maurice praised Smith’s look, some fans were less convinced by the avant-garde outfit. In the comments section of the TikTok video, several individuals humorously compared the cape to those used by hairdressers to protect customers’ clothing. In contrast, others drew parallels to nuns or Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series.

However, many fashion-forward fans approved and defended the singer against the mockery. They highlighted that they would stop Smith on the street to admire the unique ensemble and praised their ability to express themselves freely.

Over the years, Smith has become known for their viral outfits and for pushing fashion boundaries, especially after coming out as non-binary and embracing more androgynous and avant-garde looks. One memorable example was their rubber suit with exaggerated flared arms and legs at the previous year’s BRIT Awards, which garnered significant online attention.

Smith’s daring fashion choices have long been a topic of discussion, with their ability to push boundaries and experiment with different styles. While opinions may vary, their confidence in their authentic self through fashion continues to inspire and spark conversations within the industry and among fans alike.
