Elton John Tells Broadway Audience That He’s Lost His Vision
Elton John revealed to the audience his loss of eyesight during Sunday’s opening-night premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical. He could not see the show due to his vision.
“As some of you may know, I had had issues, and now I have lost my sight,” the EGOT winner said onstage, “I haven’t been to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it.”
This is not the first time the musician, 77, shared his issues with his vision after returning home from his vacation in the South of France earlier this year. He revealed the issue during an interview with Good Morning America, talking about how the infection had significantly impacted his ability to perform daily tasks.
“It kind of floored me, and I can’t see anything,” he said during his interview. I can’t read anything. I can’t watch anything.” He added that his left eye infection prevents him from reading lyrics, but he is taking the initiative to heal.
Elton’s husband, David Furnish, 62, was with him at the musical and helped him get down from the stage. John credited his husband with helping him through his vision issues.
“To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of my previews,” Elton said, “it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight.”
The “Rocket Man” singer previously revealed in an Instagram post that he had contracted the infection, noting that he had limited vision in one eye.
“I am healing,” he wrote at the time, “but it’s a prolonged process, and it will take some time before [my] sight returns to the impacted eye.”
In his posts, he expressed gratitude for the doctors and nurses who performed their jobs patiently and for his family’s care while he was on his road to recovery. He spent the rest of his summer healing at home and felt optimistic about the progress he has made in his recovery so far.
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but kind of stuck at the moment, going into the studio and recording, I don’t know.”
How the issue will impact the rest of his Farewell Tour schedule is currently unknown.
