Elon Musk Says There’s A ’70 Percent’ Chance He’ll Move To Mars [VIDEO]

Elon Musk said in a new interview this week there is a strong possibility he may move to Mars.

Speaking with Axios on HBO, the 47-year-old South African-born Tesla co-founder and CEO said there’s a “70 percent” chance he’ll relocate to the planet.

“I’m talking about moving there,” said Musk, who is also the CEO of SpaceX. “We’ve recently made a number of breakthroughs that I’m just really fired up about.”

How much would it cost to get to Mars? Musk said the price would most likely be at least a “couple of hundred thousand dollars,” and that a trip to the planet could potentially happen as soon as seven years from now.

“Your probability of dying on Mars is much higher than on Earth,” he added. “It’s gonna be hard. There’s a good chance of death, going in a little can through deep space.”

Musk has long spoken of his desire to travel to Mars, and has also drawn headlines in recent months because of his erratic behavior and sudden decisions regarding Tesla’s finances, some of which he has announced on Twitter. In July, the entrepreneur also received backlash after he called a rescue diver who participated in an operation to save a Thai boys soccer team from a cave a “pedo.”

In September, the SEC charged Musk with misleading investors after he stated in a series of tweets one month prior that he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 per share. He and Tesla eventually fined $20 million each, something Musk said in a separate tweet in October was “worth it.”

Musk also said in the new interview that he does not believe traveling to Mars would be an “escape hatch for rich people” because of the perils associated with the mission.
