Ella Emhoff, stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris, solidified herself as someone to watch at the presidential inauguration this week. Style icons like Michele Obama, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez wowed viewers, but Emhoff’s plaid hounds tooth jacket stood out amongst the crowd’s monochromatic looks.

The coat had a cinched waist, white collar, and sparkling embellishments concentrated on the shoulders. The coat was designed by Miu Miu, a subsidiary of Prada. Her outerwear look was completed by  a black mask, circular glasses, leather gloves and a Loeffler Randall headband.

Underneath the coat, Emhoff wore a burgundy dress with a high neckline and puffed shoulders, designed by Batsheva.

“Ella liked a certain style that she’d found online on Matches, and I looked through some of the new things I was working on — samples and stuff — and we came up with a great version of it in a different fabric,” Batsheva Hay said in an interview with Vogue.

Emhoff told Vogue she was going for a girlier look with scalloped edges, small buttons, and big shoulders.

“I was going for something girlier, to embrace my feminine side – especially after that suit that I felt so great in – because, like, how many times do you prepare yourself to attend an inauguration? This momentous of an event deserves a momentous outfit,” she said.

Hay said she likes how unique Emhoff’s style is amongst the usual fashion choices in Washington D.C.
