E’dena Hines, the step-granddaughter of actor Morgan Freeman, was stabbed to death in Manhattan early Sunday morning.

E’dena Hines, Morgan Freeman’s Granddaughter, Killed

Hines,33, was allegedly stabbed to death by her live-in boyfriend Lamar Davenport at roughly 3 a.m. Sunday in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, reported the New York Post. Hines was stabbed 16 times on the sidewalk just a few buildings down from her own apartment. She was subsequently taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Davenport, who allegedly has a history of abusing cocaine and alcohol, was apparently in a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the attack. “Get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out!” he shouted during the stabbing, according to witness George Hudacko. “Jesus Christ is born!”

After being arrested at the scene of the murder, Davenport was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital for a psychological evaluation. He has since been charged with Hines’ murder.

Hines had followed her step-grandfather into acting, graduating from NYU’s Graduate Acting Program. Following her graduation, Hines landed a part on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun in 2012. Though she’d briefly quit acting, she’d recently returned to the craft after receiving a part in the indie film Landing Up. She also had a part as a receptionist in Freeman and Diane Keaton‘s 2015 film 5 Flights Up.

“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person,” Freeman said in a statement to People. “Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”
