Dwayne Wade Admits He Almost Didn’t Tell Wife Gabrielle Union About Baby He Was Having With Another Woman

While actress Gabrielle Union and retired NBA player Dwayne Wade were on a break, Wade fathered a child with another woman – and almost didn’t tell Union.

In an interview on the podcast Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe on Wednesday, Wade admitted that he had initially tried to break up with his now-wife before she found out. He explained, “I tried to pussyfoot around it.”

Despite Union and Wade’s then five-year-old relationship, Wade has made it very clear that he never cheated – he and Union were on an established break.

In his conversation with the actress, he said he told Union, “Hey, things have been bad lately… We’ve been having a little distance in our relationship anyway.”

However, Union continued to “show up” for Wade, and he finally told her about his relationship with Basketball Wives star Aja Metoyer in 2013.

Wade proposed to Union that December and the duo wed in August 2014 in Miami.

“I couldn’t have gotten through that moment without her sticking with me,” he continued. “That was a rough time for me. You got a lot on your mind. You’re keeping something from people you love. It’s heavy.”

When asked by Sharpe, Wade affirmed that the conversation with his wife was “way harder” than the NBA finals.

In 2022, Union wrote in her memoir, You Got Anything Stronger, about the incident. “I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy, I am not sure I have them now,” she wrote. “But truth matters.”

Wade’s son with Metoyer, Xavier, is now 9. Wade has two children with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches, Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16. 

He and Union suffered several miscarriages before they welcomed their daughter Kaavia via surrogate. Kaavia is now 4.
