Drake Hoped ‘Hotline Bling’ Would Be His First No. 1 Hit, Loses To The Weeknd’s ‘The Hills’

Drake had high hopes that the viral music video for “Hotline Bling” would help him finally get his first No. 1 hit – but it wasn’t to be.

‘Hotline Bling’ Doesn’t Reach No. 1

Drake believed that when Billboard released the Hot 100 chart this week that “Hotline Bling” would have made its way to the top. In a surprise final result, The Weeknd‘s “The Hills” held onto No. 1 for another week. It’s the sixth week in a row that “The Hills” has been in the top spot. “Hotline Bling,” whose video has inspired countless memes, remained No. 2.

Ahead of the Hot 100 list reveal, Drake hoped – and predicted – that this would be his moment. The singer, who can boast being one of only three artists with over 100 songs that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, wrote on Instagram that seeing “Hotline Bling” at No. 1 would be his greatest career achievement.

“I spend my life trying to make waves for the city I am from. No accolades really matter to me other than the fact that I have never had a billboard number one,” Drake wrote. “If I get my first number one during the month of October it will be the biggest moment of my career to date (in my mind).”

“And if you are looking for me on that particular evening I will be passed out in the water slide that connects to our pool,” Drake added. “I love you and thank you for these memories. I always love the moment right before it happens more than when it actually happens. So thank you…even if it doesn’t.”

Unfortunately for Drake, its unlikely that “Hotline Bling” will reach the top spot when Billboard announces the Hot 100 next week. It’s expected that Adele‘s first new single in years, “Hello,” will likely claim that honor.
