Drake dropped a brand new mixtape album late Thursday night titled If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late – his first album since 2013’s Nothing Was The Same.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from Drake for years, as rumors of mixtapes and secret albums have run wild. On Thursday, Drake hinted at a possible new project, releasing a short film titled Jungle that featured snippets of new music. The film took fans on a tour of a day in the life of Drake in his hometown of Toronto.
Less than 24 hours after the short film premiered online, Drake’s new album/mixtape was available for purchase on iTunes. Jungle is also the title of a track featured on the album.
The 17-track album, which is now only available to purchase on iTunes in the US and available to listen to on Spotify, features a handful of collaborative tracks, with guests ranging from Lil Wayne to Travi$ Scott, but the songs that have everybody talking are “You & The 6” and “6 PM in New York.”
“6 PM in New York” is the last track on the album and is rumored to be a response to a feud with rapper Tyga:
I heard a lil lil homie talking reckless in Vibe
Quite a platform you chose, you shoulda kept it inside
Oh you tried, it’s so childish calling my name on the world stage
You need to act your age and not your girl’s age
Tyga, a former Cash Money Records artist – the same label that hosts Drake, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj – reportedly told Vibe that he didn’t like Drake or Minaj, marking the beginning of the end of his relationship with Cash Money. “I don’t like Drake as a person. He’s just fake to me,” Tyga said. As for the young girlfriend the lyrics reference, many are speculating Drake is rapping about Kylie Jenner, 17, who is rumored to be dating Tyga, 25.
Whether or not Drake is reigniting his feud with Tyga, it seems the rapper might be leaving Cash Money, following in Tyga’s footsteps. As soon as the surprise album dropped, the press was abuzz with rumors that Drake released the album as an attempt to fulfill his existing contract with theso that he can be free to sign with another label. Cash Money artist Lil Wayne has already announced his plans to fulfill his contract with the label and leave, and many believe that he has no intention of leaving Drake, his protégé, behind.
According to some reports, Drake could be dumping all of his extra material in this mixtape/album in an effort to fulfill his contract before dropping the new album he really wants to release – the much talked about Views from the 6.
