On Wednesday, Donald Trump was pictured leaving Trump Tower with red markings on his hand, which looked to many like blood.

The former president was on his way to E. Jean Carroll‘s second defamation trial against him.

Following the photo’s publication, theories about Trump’s hands began to circulate. Several users on X took the opportunity to joke about his diet and appearance.

“The fake suntan is rubbing off,” one user posted.

Another user chimed in with, “Ketchup from last night’s McDonalds run.”

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel even mentioned the photo on his late-night talk show. The host brought up the theory that the red marks were due to a sexually transmitted disease. Kimmel pointed out the irony of it, with Trump stating in the past that avoiding STIs was his “personal Vietnam.”

Kimmel then added that ketchup was the most likely cause: “He probably got his hands in a container of curly fries or something.”

A few social media observers thought the marks on Trump’s hands were blisters from golfing or arthritis. Others brought up frostbite from frigid temperatures in the midwest considering Trump had been in Iowa on Monday for the caucus.

Trump’s camp has since come out with an explanation: bloody paper cuts. Noting that Trump did not have any more noticeable cuts on his hands the following day, most have accepted this answer.

At the Carroll trial, Trump was threatened by the judge with being removed from the courtroom due to his frequent outbursts.
