The Donald Trump for President campaign has clarified a statement made while at an armory in South Carolina on Monday that the former president purchased a Glock handgun.

A since-deleted video posted by Trump’s spokesperson on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed Trump admiring a handgun.

“I’ve got to buy one. I want to buy one,” he said.

The post asserted that Trump, the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, bought the semi-automatic pistol that day.

However, his campaign later told NBC News that Trump did not make the purchase.

Trump has been indicted on four criminal cases this year – federal law bars people indicted for crimes from buying firearms. The former president is currently facing 91 criminal charges in three states and the District of Columbia over his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that he lost to Joe Biden.

South Carolina law requires that individuals pass an instant background check, which includes a check on felony indictments and drug-use history.

On Tuesday, a judge in New York ruled that Trump’s business had committed widespread fraud over years and ordered it into receivership, which could result in the sale of all its assets.
