Last night’s presidential debate was another showing of little policy talk and a slew of personal insults, but one in particular caught the attention of women — and men — everywhere.
Near the end of the debate, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was discussing finances and taxation, and made a quip about republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “I am on record as saying that we need to put more money into the Social Security trust fund,” Clinton explained. “That’s part of my commitment to raise taxes on the wealthy. My Social Security payroll contribution will go up, as will Donald’s — assuming he can’t figure out how to get out of it.”
This jab is in reference, of course, to the much talked about topic that Trump has not yet released his tax returns, a practice that American presidential candidates have taken part in for decades. Trump, apparently, had had enough. “Such a nasty woman,” he breathed into his microphone. Clinton was not fazed in the least, and continued on with her answer.
Trump’s childish comment brought an onslaught of humor and determination on Twitter, with woman declaring proudly that they are also ‘nasty women.’ Within minutes, #NastyWoman was a top trending topic.
Many people pointed out the irony of Trump’s outburst, coming after he claimed that “nobody respects women more than me.”
Then some made the connection to Janet Jackson‘s hit song “Nasty.”
Even more joined the conversation with some witty humor, and then with the determination to remind everyone that all these nasty women out here will definitely be exercising their right to vote on Nov. 8.
