DOGE Staffer Marko Elez Resigns After Being Linked To A Racist Social Media Account, Elon Musk Vows To Rehire Him
Marko Elez, a former staff member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), resigned from the organization after he was connected to a racist social media account.
Elez, who once worked at X and SpaceX, had been working inside the Treasury Department to cut costs and root out fraud as part of Elon Musk‘s DOGE effort.
He was one of the two temporary special government appointees at the Treasury connected to DOGE, who were given access to a highly sensitive Treasury system that processes trillions of dollars in payments each year.
His access to the Treasury payment system raised alarms over whether or not sensitive data, such as the banking information of millions of Americans, is being shared with Musk and his allies.
According to The Wall Street Journal, 2024 posts from a now-deleted account, going under the name @nullllptr, were connected to Elez on X. These posts consisted mostly of racist comments and even recommended eugenics.
“You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity,” Elez wrote on X in September 2024.
“I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth,” he also declared at some point last year.
“I just want a eugenic immigration policy, is that too much to ask,” he said three months later.
White House officials confirmed his resignation after they addressed the ex-DOGE staff member’s activity on X.
The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Elez resigned on Feb. 6 after the Journal asked about his former account.
The outlet also stated that the account once went under the username @marko_elez. The user described themselves as an employee of both SpaceX and Starlink, the company’s satellite program.
On Feb. 7, Musk went to X asking his followers in one post if Elez should be reinstated.
“Bring back @DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now-deleted pseudonym,” he asked.
The caption was attached to a poll that asked users to answer “yes” or “no” to this question. This poll currently has 78% “yes” votes and 22% ” no” votes.
