Hip-hop icon Earl Simmons, better known as DMX died April 9; the official cause of his death has recently been revealed. DMX died at 50 due to a cocaine overdose.
The rapper was in cardiac arrest for a period of time with no circulation to the brain. His death was caused by acute cocaine intoxication, according to the medical examiner’s report.
After he was hospitalized on April 2, his family announced he was in a “vegetative state” after a drug-induced heart attack.
“We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges,” said DMX’s family in a statement. “Earl was a warrior who fought [until] the very end.”
The artist’s fans gathered by Westchester’s. White Plains Hospital, where he remained on life support.
On the day of his death, he dropped a posthumous track. “I make moves to get me where I’m going,” he said at the beginning of his unofficial swan song, “X Moves.”
A memorial service was held for him at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The service featured performances by Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir and tributes from his friends and family.
“It hurts anytime you lose a soldier, but this one hurts differently because he was the main piece on the board,” said Jadakiss at the services.
