Golfer Rory McIlroy reportedly called off his engagement to tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki in a three-minute phone call a day after telling her how much he loved her.

Wozniacki was apparently completely taken by surprise when she got a call from McIlroy, who was telling her that he wasn’t ready to marry her. He “called off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki by telephone,” a source told The Times of London, adding that the call was “less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was three-minute conversation she thought was a joke.”

McIlroy subsequently decided to publicly announce his decision to back out of his wedding plans with Wozniacki.

"The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails,” he said through a rep. "I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.”

When McIlroy was pressed about why he’d made a point of taking the split public so soon after it had occurred, he defended his decision.

“It's one of those things… it was a very public relationship and I thought it was best that, instead of letting it linger and have rumours and everything, have it out there as soon as possible,” he said, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

While McIllroy went on to win the BMW PGA tournament following the split announcement, Wozniacki was dropped in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday, falling 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 to 64-ranked Yanina Wickmayer. Wozniacki, incidentally, had been ranked 14th going into the tournament.

“Obviously it’s always you know, you’re not prepared for something like this, and [the breakup] came a bit as a shock,” said Wozniacki at a press conference.

McIlroy and Wozniacki became engaged this past New Years Eve after dating since 2011.
