Did Beyonce Lip-Sync "The Star Spangled Banner?"

There is speculation Beyonce lip-synced “The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding the singer’s performance, with a member of the U.S. Marine Band claiming Beyonce elected to use a pre-recorded track, while a representative for the Pentagon claimed that we wouldn’t be able to know for sure, People reports.

Inclement weather, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, could have played a part in Beyonce’s rumored decision to lip-sync. At least one artist expressed her understanding for the possible move.

"I think it's optional really, it's up to the artist," Aretha Franklin, who sang at the 2009 Inauguration, told USA Today. "In 2009, I wanted everything to be live and on the real side for the moment as it actually happened. Those were my feelings for my performance, but having come face to face with 28, 22 degrees I am not surprised she pre-recorded. She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn't going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That's probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard."

Four years prior Beyonce performed a moving live rendition of the Etta James classic “At Last” for the first dance between the newly-elected first couple.

Whether Beyonce’s performance was lip-synced or not, it sure went along smoothly. The only speedbump appeared to be when she had to remove her earpiece near the end of the anthem, and even then she kept her composure. So if in fact this whole deal was lip-synced, at least it was debacle free, unlike Ashlee Simpson’s disastrous lip-syncing ordeal on Saturday Night Live when the wrong recording track began playing over the speakers and the singer awkwardly danced off the stage.– Hal Sundt
