Darren Young surprised a cameraman at Los Angeles International Airport when he revealed he was gay in an off the cuff response to a question regarding what he thought about gay wrestlers competing in the league.

"Absolutely. Look at me. I'm a WWE Superstar and, to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay,” he told the TMZ reporter. “And I'm happy. Very happy."

Caught off guard, the cameraman gave a nervous laugh and admitted to being “flabbergasted” before telling Young, “I commend your bravery.” The cameraman then went on to reference that he had just ostensibly come out of the closet publicly for the first time, and asked Young how he felt about that.

"I guess if you want to call it 'coming out,' I really don't know what to say it is," the professional wrestler replied. "I'm just letting you know that I'm happy [with] who I am, I'm comfortable with myself, and I'm happy to be living the dream.

“Some people might not like it. Some people will like it. I'm here to please myself. I'm here to be happy … I'm hoping to make a difference,” he continued. “It's very important to me to make people understand that someone's sexual preference shouldn't really matter. It should be about the person."

After news broke of Young’s understated revelation, the WWE released a statement, noting their support for the entertainer. "WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar," the statement read. "Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation."

Current WWE champ John Cena also weighed in on Young's coming out. "Wonderful," Cena said when he was told the news by a TMZ reporter. "I know Darren personally. Darren's a great guy. That's a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it."

Young, who is competing in the WWE’s SummerSlam event in LA, joined the organization in 2005 after wrestling professionally for three years. He’s currently forming the Prime Time Players with Titus O’Neil.
