Who Is Daron Wint, The Savopoulos Family Murder Suspect?

Daron Wint has been arrested for the quadruple murder of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper that rocked Washington D.C. in May.

Daron Wint Arrested For Quadruple Murder

Wint is believed to have murdered Savvas Savopoulos, 46, his wife Amy Savopoulos, 47, their son Philip, 10, and their housekeeper, Veralicia ‘Vera’ Figueroa, 57. The bodies were found on May 14 in the Savopoulos home after it had been set on fire.

Police identified Wint as a suspect on Wednesday, May 20, after his DNA was discovered on a pizza crust found inside the Savopoulos home. The pizza was delivered to the Savopoulos home on the night of May 13, and it is believed that Wint held the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper hostage in their home overnight. On the morning of May 14, an assistant delivered $40,000 in cash to the Savopoulos home. The money reportedly came from an account at American Iron Works – Savvas Savopoulos was CEO. The victims were beaten and stabbed to death, according to the police, shortly after the money was delivered. The suspect then allegedly doused the bodies and the home in gasoline and started a fire, which alerted authorities and led to the discovery of the bodies.

Wint is the only suspect that has been identified by the police, but authorities are considering the possibility that others were involved in the murders. Wint worked at American Iron Works, Savopoulos’ company, from 2003 to 2005 as a welder, and was allegedly fired from his job.

Wint was born and raised in Guyana before he moved to the US in 2000 and joined the Marine Corps. He was discharged for medical reasons and then began his career as a welder.

Wint’s former lawyer, Robin Ficker, insists his client had no part in the murders, saying, “He is a gentle guy. He was a student at Prince George’s Community College. He wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

However, Wint was convicted of assaulting a girlfriend in Maryland in 2009. One year later, he pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property after allegedly breaking into a woman’s apartment and threatening to kill her and her daughter. “The defendant advised he was good with a knife and could kill them easily and was not afraid of the police,” a detective wrote about the case.

Wint was also arrested on four separate occasions in Oswego, N.Y., with charges including assault, harassment and violating an order of protection. In fact, Wint has had various orders of protection issued against him, including one from his father in 2005 stemming from an alleged incident during which Wint threatened to shoot his father and stepmother.
