Olympian Ryan Lochte was eliminated from last night’s Dancing With the Stars Halloween episode, while his Olympic colleague Laurie Hernandez earned perfect marks.
It was a spooky Halloween indeed on the show, with each couple dressed up as fun and frightening characters. Lochte and partner Cheryl Burke did a tango to “Howlin’ for You” by the Black Keys while dressed in dark feathery outfits. While some argue that this was Lochte’s best dance yet, but it was not enough to keep him safe from elimination. “Cheryl created a great world for you to kick and fight your way back but because of that you kind of lost a little bit of your grace,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba. “It was a little hunched over and sometimes I was like, ‘Oh, it’s like wrestling,’ but no no, ballroom dancing.”
“Even though it was a bit squatty at times, your performance outweighed that,” added judge Julianne Hough. Their total score was 23/30.
Hernandez and partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy performed a Viennese waltz to “Pure Imagination” by Jane Monheit. Their dancing was smooth and set in the world of Willy Wonka. Before the dance, Chmerkovskiy was seen getting emotional over his partner, saying how much she means to him and that he would love to win the whole thing for her. The dance earned them a perfect score of 30/30.
They were just one of three couples to get a perfect score in the Halloween episode. Calvin Johnson, Jr. and Lindsay Arnold found 30/30 in their quickstep routine, as did James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess for their Viennese waltz. The remaining three couples of Terra Jolé and Sasha Farber, Marilu Henner and Derek Hough, and Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko, getting a 24/30, 24/30 and 27/30, respectively.
Last came the improvised dance competitions. The two least favorites were pitted against each other, namely Lochte and Henner, and despite Lochte winning that popularity contest, he was still eliminated at the end of the program.
