Former President Donald Trump supporters in the House of Representatives are pushing a bill to rename Dulles Airport outside of Washington, D.C., after the former president.

On April 2, a group of Trump supporters launched the effort to rename this airport to express admiration for the Republican 2024 presidential candidate.

The airport is named after John Foster Dulles, the secretary of state in the 1950s and during Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency.

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pennsylvania), the Republican Party’s chief deputy whip in the House, stated that he was introducing legislation to change the name of the airport since Trump was “the best president of” his “lifetime.”

“As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil,” Reschenthaler stated.

“Freedom,” he wrote in an X post on April 2. “Prosperity. Strength. That’s what America stood for under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump – the best president of my lifetime. And that’s why I’m introducing legislation to rename Dulles as the Donald J. Trump International Airport.”

On March 29, Reschenthaler introduced bill HR 7845, which proposes changing the airport’s name.

Six other Republican lawmakers, including Representatives Michael Waltz(R-Florida), Andy Ogles (R-Tennessee), Charles Fleischmann (R-Tennessee), Paul Gosar (R-Arizona), Barry Mooreof (R-Alabama), and Troy Nehls (Texas), are co-sponsoring the bill.

The bill is unlikely to become law as the Republican majority in the House is just one seat, and the Democrats control both the Senate and the White House.

The draft bill would require the name change in any law, regulation, map, document or other official record.

This bill drew criticism from House Democrats.

“Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges,” Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly (R-Virginia) said in a statement. “If Republicans want to name something after him, I’d suggest they find a federal prison.”

“I remember Republicans like those who wrote this bill hiding and giving mealy-mouthed responses when asked about the suffering Trump’s Muslim ban caused,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Virginia) wrote on X. “They know Dulles will never be renamed after Trump. Again, that’s not the point, the point is to suck up to their Dear Leader.”

“My friend [Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland)], who was with us in Dulles that day, recently said, ‘America faces a memory test today,'” Beyer recounted in another X post. “He’s right.”
