Doug Emhoff Snubs Sen. Deb Fischer’s Husband After He Refused To Shake Kamala Harris’ Hand

Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, refused to give Bruce Fischer, the husband of Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), a handshake at Monday’s Inauguration.

Earlier this month, Bruce was criticized on social media for refusing to shake Harris’ hand during Deb’s swearing-in ceremony, even though other angles of this moment reveal that his right hand, often used for handshakes, was used to grip his cane.

During the ceremony, Harris administered the oath to the Nebraska senator while her hand was rested on the Bible. She then shook her hand, congratulated her, and thanked her for her work.

The former vice president then offered to shake Bruce’s hand while congratulating him. He told her, “Thank you,” but did not give her his hand back, which caused her to awkwardly turn toward the camera and smile with Deb and her husband for a photograph.

During the ceremonial tea at the White House before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, Emhoff, who praised his wife during a Democratic National Convention speech last year, refused a handshake from Bruce, a source familiar with the interaction said.

According to the insider, he asked the senator’s husband, “Why would you try to shake my hand when you wouldn’t shake my wife’s hand? “

Harris and Deb were not involved in the interaction, but Bruce returned to apologize.

By the time they headed to the car to the Capitol, the two couples were peaceful and had a friendly conversation, which focused on golf and other subjects.

Emhoff has been his wife’s biggest booster. In August 2020, he took leave from his law firm to be with Harris during her run for vice president.
