Donald Trump Said He Wouldn’t Be Single ‘Long’ If Melania Left Him Over Affair With Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen Testifies
Donald Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, revealed that his ex-client was highly confident that he could replace Melania Trump if she discovered he had an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels.
During court testimony on Tuesday, Cohen made this claim as he testified on the witness stand during Trump’s New York hush money trial.
During his testimony, Cohen was asked about how the former president reacted when he found out Daniels was shopping around her story about him less than a month before Election Day in 2016.
Cohen recounted that when they had been dealing with the possibility that the former adult star could go public, he asked his ex-client how things had been going “upstairs” with Melania, to which Trump implied that he would not be single long after.
“‘Don’t worry,’ he goes, ‘how long do you think I’ll be on the market for,'” Trump allegedly said to Cohen. “‘Not long.'”
“He wasn’t thinking about Melania,” the lawyer testified. “This was all about the campaign.”
Even though Trump did not appear to be bothered by the fact that Daniels’ affair accusations could destroy his marriage, Cohen declared that Trump had been angry when he learned about the adult star’s story.
“‘I thought you took care of this,'” Trump allegedly told Cohen. “‘This is a disaster, total disaster. Women are going to hate me. Guys, they think it’s cool, but this is going to be a disaster for the campaign.'”
Cohen said Melania texted him, sharing concern that Daniels would advertise her story in a tabloid.
“Good morning, Michael. Can u pls call DT on his cell,” she asked Cohen via text message. “Thanks.”
The lawyer said Trump had urged him to merely delay paying Daniels until after the election, saying that if he won, then he would already be president, and if he lost, it would not matter. Cohen testified that he did not intend to meet the funding deadline for the agreement with Daniels.
However, due to the “urgency that was happening” with the release of the Access Hollywood tape, Cohen eventually chose to pay the $130,000 himself with the understanding that Trump would pay him back later on.
He told the jurors that “everything required Trump’s sign-off,” and he had been ordered to “just do it.”
He also said that Trump set up a shell company, listed as a “real estate consulting company,” to make the payment.
Prosecutors stated that the former president later paid the money back to Cohen and covered it up by recording it as a legal retainer fee.
Last week at Trump’s hush money trial, former White House press secretary and director of communications Hope Hicks testified against the former president.
Despite being nervous, Hicks went into detail about her former boss’ many scandals and spoke positively and her career in the White House while also praising his family.
During cross-examination, she started tearing up at the end of her testimony, ultimately breaking down in tears. Judge Juan Merchan called for a short break, but Hicks already offered her side of the story.
Last Thursday, Daniels shot back at Trump on X after testifying at his hush money trial, implying that he is “not a real man” since he did not “respond to testimony by being sworn in and taking the stand in court.”
His legal team tried amending his gag order, which Merchan ruled he violated ten times so that the former president could respond to the former actress’ testimony.
The team declared that since Daniels already testified, she could not be intimidated, which could have affected the trial if she was not already on the stand. They also said that she disclosed too much information about the supposed affair between herself and the former president. Merchan rejected their motion to declare a mistrial.
Susan Necheles, Trump’s only female lawyer, attempted to diminish Daniels’ testimony on cross-examination, arguing that she changed her story about the affair.
