Chris Christie declared that he would not pardon Donald Trump if he is convicted of a crime.

On January 3, Christie made an appearance on The View during which one of the show’s cohosts, Joy Behar, noted that his opponents, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, had already pledged to pardon Trump. She wondered if Christie would do the same.

“No, no, no, no,” he replied.

“One of the reasons is, as a governor, I issued pardons,” Christie stated. “And one of the things you have to do is look at the person. The person has to accept responsibility for what they did.”

“Do you think Donald Trump will ever accept responsibility for anything he did,” the former federal prosecutor asked. “It’d be really the easiest pardon decision I would ever have to make as president. You don’t accept responsibility? Too bad. Go to jail.”

“I think the other thing about what both Nikki and Ron are doing right now is this isn’t about this race, this is about 2028,” Christie added.

“Neither one of them are going after Donald Trump without running against him,” he stated. “What they’re trying to do is do the best they can to come in second, and in ’28, they wouldn’t have offended any of Trump’s voters.”

Christie said that when Trump is gone due to being done with his second term, losing to someone else again or being imprisoned, then Haley and DeSantis can tell the voters that they never said anything negative about the former president.

“This is the most cynical type of politics–” Christie added before Sunny Hostin, another one of this show’s cohosts, cut him off.

“Well it’s intellectual dishonesty, isn’t it,” Hostin asked him.

“Well it’s complete intellectual dishonesty, and look, the stuff you saw from Nikki last week in the issue of the Civil War-,” Christie responded, referencing Hailey’s comments that the Civil War was not about slavery.

“That may have been stupidity,” Hostin interrupted.

“Sunny, I’ll have to disagree with you,” Christie replied. “She knew exactly what she was doing.”

Hostin commented that if Haley’s comments were intentional, that made them far worse. Christie agreed with her.

“Oh yes, she’s a smart woman, I’ve known her for 13 years,” he claimed.

“She’s smart, and she’s not a racist,” Christie said. “There’s not a racist bone in Nikki Haley’s body. There just isn’t.”

“I got to tell you, she better start working on that,” host Whoopi Goldberg stated. “‘Cause it really didn’t come off that way!”

“It never looks good when you’re trying to pretend to be something you’re not,” Christie stated.

Trump was charged in four criminal cases in 2023. He has been charged with four felony counts in Washington, D.C., which stemmed from his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

The former president is also facing 40 felony counts in Florida for hiding classified government documents after leaving office, and for preventing these documents from being returned.

Additionally, he is facing 13 felony counts in Georgia for interfering with the election in that state and 34 felony counts in New York connected to hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Last September, Christie slammed Trump for not attending the GOP debates.
