Cory Monteith: What Caused His Death? Autopsy Set For Today

Cory Monteith’s death over the weekend stunned the actor’s Glee costars and fans of the hit musical comedy series alike. The untimely passing of the young star has left many grieving and speculating as to what caused cause it.

Monteith, 31, was found dead in his hotel room at the Fairmount Pacific Hotel in Vancouver, Canada on Saturday after missing his scheduled checkout time. He had spent time with some friends in his room before heading ou the previous night. When he returned home early Saturday morning, he was alone, according to acting Vancouver Police Chief Doug LePard.

“We have interviewed everyone he was with the night before,” Vancouver Police Constable Brian Montague said Sunday. “For the most part, it has been turned to the coroner’s office, who will be determining the next steps with respect to establishing cause of death.” Montague further stated that there were no obvious signs of foul play. He did not comment on whether or not drugs were found in the room, but did state that an autopsy was planned for Monday.

The results of Monteith’s autopsy are expected to be revealed sometime this week. "Due to the intense public interest, the toxicology will be expedited," a Vancouver Police Dept. source told E! News, adding that the results could be made public “in 2 or 3 days.”

Due to Monteith’s past history of substance abuse, there have been multiple suggestions that drugs could have been a factor in his death. “Given his history and struggle [with substance abuse], we suspect the worse,” a Glee source told The New York Daily News. “But you never know. It could have been something else. Such a shame. He had come so far in his life and was such a sweet guy.”

Back in April, Monteith checked himself into rehab for his ongoing battle with addition. “He graciously asks for you respect and privacy as he takes the necessary steps towards recovery,” his publicist had said in a statement at the time. Monteith’s surviving girlfriend and Glee costar Lea Michele had said, “I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this. I am grateful and proud he made this decision.”

Monteith had been open about his struggles with addition, admitting to first using drugs at the age of 13 in an interview with Parade magazine in 2011. He further revealed that he went to rehab for the first time at 19.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic news,” read a statement on behalf of Glee’s executive producers. “Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."
