Confession Obtained From Teen Suspect In Jessica Ridgeway Case, Reports DA

Austin Sigg, 17, the under-age suspect who was arrested in the abduction and murder of Jessica Ridgeway, 10, on October 5, in Colorado, has reportedly confessed to the crime of killing the young girl.

"The evidence is overwhelming," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Hal Sargeant on Thursday, reports People. Sigg is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping for the Ridgeway case. He is also being charged with criminal attempt to kidnap and murder in the case of a jogger whom he allegedly attacked on Memorial Day, but who got away.

Sigg had his first court appearance on Thursday, at which a prosecutor said that they have "a confession and DNA match" already. The Ridgeway family was also present in court, wearing purple, which was Jessica's favorite color.

Sigg's mother, who reportedly called police after speaking to her son, was also present in the court room, where it was also revealed that the district attorney intends to try him as an adult — a decision that could raise his sentence from 7 to 40 years if he is convicted, reports the Denver Post. Seeking the death penalty is not an option for minors.

Sigg's father, Rob Sigg, who has had is his own history of scrapes with the law, issued a statement on Thursday afternoon. "First, I would ask for your prayers and support for the Ridgeway family," he wrote. There are no words to express the sorrow that I and my family feel for their pain they are suffering. We are devastated by the knowledge that my son, Austin Sigg, has been arrested and will be charged with the murder of their beautiful daughter Jessica. This horrible event is a tragedy for both the families, as well as the community. I ask also for your prayers and support for Austin’s mother, whose courageous act … unimaginably painful for any parent … has put this tragedy on the path to resolution. I am hopeful that as the legal process unfolds, the Ridgeway family may come to know peace."

Sigg will return to court on Tuesday, when he is suspected to be charged as an adult, reports People.
