Colin Kaepernick & Ava DuVernay To Collaborate On Netflix Series About His High School Years, ‘Colin In Black & White’

Colin Kaepernick has teamed up with Ava DuVernay and Michael Starrbury on a new Netflix series, Colin In Black & White. The limited series will follow Kaepernick’s early life, Netflix announced on Monday.

Colin In Black & White focuses on Kaepernick’s high school years and provides insight into his experiences that made him an activist today. It will also touch on Kaepernick’s experience as an adopted black child in a white family and his athletic career.

DuVernay and Starrbury’s last collaboration was the 16-time Emmy nominated series, When They See Us.

The series includes six episodes which were developed in 2019. The writing was completed in May. There has yet to be an announcement regarding the series’ release date.

In a statement, DuVernay said, “With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture, and for him, personally. Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports, and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”

Kaepernick said in a statement, “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens. We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

In February, Kaepernick announced that he would be releasing a memoir later this year. The book is “part political awakening and part memoir” and will be published through his newly launched publishing label.
