Colin Farrell has joined the cast of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Farrell will join Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller and Alison Sudol in the new Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts.
Farrell has been given the role of Graves, a wizard that Newt Scamander (Redmayne) meets in New York.
The story focuses on Newt’s adventures in the secret community of witches and wizards as he attempts to document magical creatures.
Fantastic Beasts takes place 70 years before Harry Potter reads Newt’s book in school. David Yates is directing the film, and J.K. Rowling has written the script.
Warner Bros Entertainment approached Rowling with the idea of turning Fantastic Beasts into a film back in 2013.
“As I considered Warner’s proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film,” Rowling admitted. “Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt.”
Harry Potter producer David Heyman will return, Steve Kloves, who wrote seven out of the last eight Potter movies, and Lionel Wigram are also producing.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling said.
Fantastic Beasts is set to premiere on Nov. 18, 2016.
