Christopher McQuarrie, 'Jack Reacher' Director, Will Direct Tom Cruise In 'Mission: Impossible 5'
Christopher McQuarrie will direct the upcoming Mission: Impossible 5 film staring his frequent collaborator Tom Cruise.
The news that Cruise would be reuniting with his Jack Reacher (2012) director for the next installment of the popular Mission: Impossible franchise was announced on Monday.
“Chris is an extraordinary filmmaker who will deliver the heart-pounding action and thrills that audiences around the world have come to expect from the Mission: Impossible franchise,” said Cruise in a statement.
McQuarrie himself took to twitter to announce the happy news, simply writing, “Mission: Accepted.” To which the official TomCruise.com twitter replied with their congratulations.McQuarrie won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1996 for The Usual Suspects, and he also wrote Tom Curise vehicles, Valkyrie (2008), and, as previously mentioned, Jack Reacher. McQuarrie and Cruise are currently collaborating on Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi action flick written by McQuarrie and staring Cruise and Emily Blunt, that made a surprise appearance at Comic Con just last month.
For all his success, McQuarrie also has some less than desirable credits: he penned the scripts of The Tourist (2010) and Jack the Giant Slayer (2013), both panned by critics. Still, it appears that the response to this new announcement has been mostly positive. McQuarrie tweeted his thanks early on Tuesday morning, following the big reveal.
The first Mission: Impossible film was released almost twenty years ago in 1996 and was directed by Brian De Palma. Since then four more Mission: Impossible films have been made, all with different directors, and all hits – earning a reported $2 billion worldwide. The release date for Mission: Impossible 5 has not yet been announced.
