Grammy Award winner Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana teamed up to record a cover of Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight.” The music video kicked off the Monday Night Football season.
The opening number debuted before the Saints vs. Panthers game and the Browns vs. Steelers game, and will continue to play throughout all Monday Night Football games for the rest of the season.
The video features Stapleton singing the famous chorus while Snoop Dogg adds in football-centered rap verses and Blackman Santana riffs on the drums.
According to video producer Rico Labbe, the MNF team wanted to create something that would excite each of their millions of viewers.
“We just wanted to make sure we heard everybody’s voices — whether it was fans’ voices, whether it was the artists’ voices, whether it was staying true to the ‘Monday Night Football’ brand over the years,” Labbe told USA Today. “We just wanted to make sure we meshed all that together. It could be a challenge. But we think we hit the sweet spot.”
“I think it’s an amazing moment in music to have different sounds — country western and hip-hop and rock — it’s like a bug gumbo,” Labbe continued. “I feel like that’s the United States.”
