Chelsea Handler harbors no warm feelings for E! after leaving the network and her Chelsea Lately talk show for greener pastures on streaming service Netflix.
Handler, 39, felt that she was forced to sell herself short on E!’s Chelsea Lately. Even though she wasn’t able to fully go in the direction she’d envisioned for herself, she does admit that she managed to push the envelope where she wanted to by sheer force of will.
“I’m so much smarter than that show was and I wanted to be doing a show that was smarter than I was,” she told The Hollywood Reporter of Chelsea Lately. “At E! I did what I wanted and I didn’t listen to anybody because I didn’t care what they had to say because I didn’t respect their opinions.”
Since leaving E! behind, Handler has signed a multifaceted deal with Netflix that includes a stand-up special – Uganda Be Kidding Me, which is already streaming – a number of upcoming docu-comedy specials and a talk show.
“At Netflix, I do respect their opinions. It’s like going out with a guy you’re proud to be seen with,” said Handler, who says the talk show will be a “healthy mix of everything that goes on around the world” and likened it to a “faster, quicker, cooler” 60 Minutes that will likely draw comparisons to Jon Stewart’s Daily Show.
“I didn’t want to go fill in someone else’s shoes,” Handler explained of her Netflix show. “I wanted to create my surroundings.”
Handler’s new talk show is slated to debut on the streaming service in early 2016.
