Channing Tatum might be backing out of his starring role in Gambit, as his deal is reportedly in jeopardy.
Channing plans to exit the 20th Century Fox comic book movie just as the studio is trying to find a lead actress for the film, according to The Wrap. Director Rupert Wyatt has been testing a slew of young female stars for Gambit, including French actress Lea Seydoux. Now, however, Wyatt might have to find a new leading man as well.
The Magic Mike XXL star reportedly has yet to make a final decision about whether or not to leave the project. Tatum, who talked about playing Gambit/Remy LeBeau at San Diego Comic-Con, has regarded the film as something of a passion project for him. However, “something is up” in discussions between Tatum’s reps and 20th Century Fox that could spell the dissolution of their deal, according to The Wrap’s insider.
If Tatum leaves Gambit, it’s unknown if the actor and his business partner Reid Carolin will continue to serve as producers.
Gambit, with or without Tatum, is slated to hit theaters Oct. 7, 2016.
