Singer Celine Dion stepped away from performing because of her battle with stiff person syndrome last year.

Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle rigidity or stiffness as well as painful muscle spasms. It is incredibly rare – one in a million people have it. A cure has not yet been identified.

Dion was diagnosed with this disease in December 2022, and since then, she has stepped away from performing due to the inability to walk or sing.

Her sister, Claudette Dion, recently commented on her condition saying that she now has “no control” at all over her muscles, she told French outlet 7 Jours.

Claudette has also said that fans of Celine’s are sending messages as well as prayers and gifts offering condolences while she is sick. She has reported that they have seen little to no improvement in Celine’s health in the past year.

Upon her original diagnosis, she had postponed her Courage concert world tour dates for 2023, but this year in May she revealed that the dates are now permanently cancelled due to her illness.

This is the second time that Celine has had to cancel tour dates. In 2014, she canceled her tour due to battles with cancer and family issues.

Claudette also stated that despite the illness and the cancellation of tour dates, Celine still has the desire to perform again.

She says that they are still maintaining hope for medical advancements and improvements in Celine’s health despite the unknown future, “The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle. This is what gets me.”

Celine’s last public appearance was at a Las Vegas Knights NHL hockey game with her sons.
