Casey Anthony is telling her side of the story in a new documentary, Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies, that will air on Peacock November 29.
This will be the first time since the 2008 disappearance of her daughter, Caylee Anthony, that Casey will sit down for an interview. She did not even testify during the 2011 trial where she was found not guilty of first-degree murder after six weeks of proceedings.
Casey was found guilty, however, of four misdemeanor counts for providing false information to investigators and ultimately served prison time.
“I lied,” Casey said in the documentary’s official trailer. “But no one asked why.”
Casey is rumored to place the blame for Caylee’s death on her father, saying he staged her drowning and covered up the death because he might have been abusing the 2-year-old girl.
In 2017, the judge who presided over Casey’s trial told HLN Casey probably killed her daughter by accident. Although he developed his own theory, he said there remained several unknowns during the trial. “‘We don’t know’ translates to not guilty,” he said.
Documentary creators had complete editorial control over the project. In the first teaser for the series, an interviewer asks Anthony, “Why talk to me now when you’re not getting creative control?”
Director Alexandra Dean stated that Anthony was kept far away from the research and development of the series.
Despite Peacock’s attempts to present the series as unbiased and investigative, the network has received backlash from subscribers for giving such a controversial figure a platform to tell her story.
The exclusive three-part documentary series will give Casey the opportunity to tell her side of the story and address accusations and assumptions that have accumulated over the last 13 years.
