Carnival Cruise Ship Hits Piece Of Ice In Alaska Fjord, Passenger Calls The Incident A ‘Titanic Moment’

The Carnival cruise ship, the Carnival Spirit, was undamaged after grazing a piece of ice in Alaska’s Tracy Arm Fjord last week.

“Carnival Spirit made contact with an errant piece of drifting ice last Thursday while sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska,” Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in a statement. “An assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull, and the vessel continued on its cruise, and there has been no impact to operations.”

The ship was able to proceed on its seven-day journey and is expected to dock in Seattle on September 17.

The Spirit’s passengers and other social media users shared footage of the ship approaching the ice while other passengers witnessed the incident.

“If we die, it was d— well worth it,” the passenger Cassandra Goskie declared in a video she shared on TikTok. “It’s a Titanic moment.”

“Oh, we are hitting it,” Goskie said while the ship struck the ice.

Many other nearby passengers crowded near the edge of the side deck to watch.

Another passenger, April Futrell, shared four pictures with meteorologist James Spann, who reposted them on X. 

One of the images shows a tugboat following behind the Spirit, easily sailing over the mostly submerged ice.

Another image shows the ice piece, and the other two are the same picture of a slight wave in the water.

On May 26, 2022, passengers on the Carnival Cruise ship Freedom, which first departed from Port Canaveral, Florida and other onlookers filmed a shocking fire while the vessel had been docked at Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Photos show the ship’s funnel engulfed in flames, and some photos also show passengers on board as it happened. However, according to Carnival Cruise Line, the ship’s emergency response team “quickly activated and extinguished a fire inside the ship’s funnel while the ship was in Grand Turk.”
