Camila Cabello on Wednesday issued an apology for a series of racially insensitive social media posts she shared as a teenager between 2012 and 2013.
The 22-year-old Cuban-American pop singer — who also has Mexican heritage — apologized in a lengthy statement on Twitter.
“When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever,” Grammy nominee Cabello wrote to her 10.3 million followers. “I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.”
“I apologized then and I apologize again now.”

Earlier this week, Cabello’s past xenophobic Tumblr posts against Mexicans, Asians and African-Americans surfaced in a Twitter thread that quickly went viral. The singer was even accused of allegedly using racial slurs like the N-word in some posts and of making a joke about domestic abuse regarding Chris Brown and Rihanna.
“The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware,” said Cabello, who was previously a member of girl band Fifth Harmony. “I use my platform to speak out about injustice and inequality and I’ll continue doing that. I can’t say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologize again from the bottom of my heart.”
People on social media seemed to be divided on Cabello’s apology. Some considered it heartfelt, while others viewed it as forced and insincere.
Cabello isn’t the first pop star to apologize for past offensive comments. Her “Señorita” co-singer Shawn Mendes also voiced contrition earlier this year for remarks he made when he was a teenager, while Justin Bieber also recently apologized once again for making racist statements when he was younger.
