Alabama Shakes has been making headlines with their smooth sounding lead vocalist – but who is she? The wild-haired lead singer of Alabama Shakes is Brittany Howard. Her soulful and sultry voice captivated audiences and even snagged them some wins last night for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.
The group also made their Grammy performance debut last night with their song, “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Howard wore a long white dress complete with a cape and her mane of curls were pulled on top of her head. She filled the stadium with her big vocals and guitar riffs.
Howard, raised in Athens, Ala., found her love of music in high school and got serious about her passion. There she met bassist, Zac Cockrell and eventually they added Steve Johnson and Heath Fogg.
They started gaining popularity in 2011 and spent most of their next years touring. They released their debut album, Boys And Girls in 2013.
With the influence of Elvis Presely and Motown, the singer felt out of place when she was younger. She later told Paste magazine, “I always felt out of place. I wasn’t a cool kid but I wasn’t a nerd either. I had trouble finding my place. But when I found the music, I had a place of my own.”
Howard started playing guitar at 13 and worked as a letter carrier before the band made it big. Alabama Shakes got their big break when Justin Gage, who runs Aquarium Dunkard blog, posted his thoughts about their sound. The band quickly gained popularity and record companies where buying for a deal and the rest is music history.
