Bradley Cooper debuted a new cropped haircut while he was in Washington, D.C., to speak at the White House Mental Health Conference on Monday – saying goodbye to the long slick-backed look he sported while promoting The Hangover IV.

Cooper has become an advocate for mental illness awareness since his turn as a manic-depressive named Pat in David O. Russell’s Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook. Both Cooper and his costar Jennifer Lawrence received Oscar nods for their performances, with Lawrence ultimately taking home the trophy for Best Actress.

“I’m sort of here by accident,” he said, referring to the influence of his movie role. “It’s not that I didn’t know about mental illness. I think it’s just that I just didn’t see it as a part of my life. It was really as if a veil had been lifted,” Cooper added.

“I realized that people that I knew, people that I loved and cared about, they were coping with this in silence.”

Earlier in the year, Cooper held a Q&A with dozens of military vets following the screening of Silver Linings Playbook at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
