Boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho, 50, has officially been declared brain dead by doctors in Puerto Rico, after being shot in the face while sitting in a car in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
“We have to tell the people of Puerto Rico and the entire world that Macho Camacho has died, he is brain dead. This is a very difficult moment,” said Dr, Ernesto Torres, who is the director of the Centro Medico trauma centre in San Juan.
It was expected that Camacho would survive the shooting, but after going into cardiac arrest, his brain activity was low. Family members are in discussion regarding whether or not to take him off life support. According to SKY News, Camacho’s father wants him off life support, but Hector’s sister doesn’t agree with their ruling.
Camacho had a boxing record of 79-6-3 with 45 wins by way of knockout. He was the WBC Super Featherweight Champion from 1983 to ’84. His next championship came in 1985, winning the WBC Lightweight Championship. He held that title until 1987. He was also the first WBO Light Welterweight Champion in 1989. In his prime, he fought such famous fighters as Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard, whose career comeback he ended with a 1997 knockout.
In later years, Camacho faced serious legal troubles. In 2005, he was arrested and charged with burglary. In 2012, Camacho turned himself into authorities for allegedly assaulting his teenage son. He tried to stay in the public light by joining a Spanish reality-TV show similar to Dancing with the Stars in 2010. He was the first contestant to lose.
