The body of Robert F. Kennedy’s 8-year-old great-grandson Gideon McKean was found on Wednesday.

Police discovered the body under 25 feet of water and 2.3 miles from his grandmother’s residence, where the family was quarantining. 

“After a five-day search that involved aviation and underwater imaging sonar technology, authorities recovered missing person, Gideon McKean, on April 8th at approximately 1:40 pm,” the Maryland Natural Resources Police said in a statement. 

This announcement was made two days after authorities found the body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, Gideon’s mother. 

According to McKean’s husband, David McKean, she and her son were playing a game and accidentally kicked their ball into the water.

“They got into a canoe, intending simply to retrieve the ball, and somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay,” he wrote on his Facebook.

The family has expressed gratitude for the team of more than 50 who searching for Maeve and Gideon McKean.  

“They have helped us bring some closure to this terrible loss, and our family will always be grateful for their tireless work,” the family said in a statement.
