Billie Eilish accused Variety of “outing” her after she addressed a previous interview with them, where she confirmed that she is attracted to women.

Eilish first created speculation last month during an interview when she spoke about her sexuality. She specifically talked about her relationship with other women saying, “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”

During Variety’s Hitmakers Awards, Eilish was asked by an interviewer, “Did you mean to come out in the story?”

Eilish replied, “No I didn’t but I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”

On speaking about the topic of coming out, Eilish shared, “I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”

Eilish shared that her first thoughts on the story were, “Oh, I guess I came out today. Okay, cool.” She continued to say, “It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.”

The singer later posted on Instagram after the event blasting the news outlet. “Thanks, Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters I like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream ‘What Was I Made For’🥸.”

Many fans did not agree with Eilish’s perspective. “Didn’t you say, ‘I thought it was obvious’ and ‘I’m for the girls’ when asked for clarification? that’s not outing💀.”

Another added, “It’s not really fair to say ‘outed on a red carpet.’ You had a conversation with a gay interviewer about the cover story where you came out. She was doing her job.”

Eilish’s last relationship was with The Neighborhood’s lead singer, Jesse Rutherford, with whom she broke up in May.
