The Big Bang Theory‘s eighth-season finale came with the shocking breakup of its central couple, Sheldon and Amy.

‘Big Bang’ Breakup

When Thursday night’s finale episode, “The Commitment Determination,” began, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) are making out on a couch. “Can you believe it’s been five years since our first date?” Amy asks Sheldon when he pauses their kiss. Instead of replying with something equally romantic, Sheldon replies, “Do you think I should start watching The Flash TV show?”

Understandably irritated, Amy wants to know why The Flash was at the forefront of his mind while they were kissing on their fifth anniversary. “I’m wrestling with a big commitment here!” Sheldon says, explaining that it could be years that he’s tied to the show. Amy thinks there’s another commitment he should be thinking about.

Later on via video chat, Amy tells Sheldon that she started to think about their relationship and wants a break. “Being your girlfriend is so challenging. Emotionally, physically. I’ve been incredibly patient for years,” she says. “Well, this isn’t easy to say because I love you, but, I need some time to take a step back and reevaluate our situation. I hope you understand.”

“Oh, okay,” Sheldon replies. After closing his laptop, he reaches for his Gollum figurine. “Well Gollum, your an expert on rings, what do I do with this one?” he asks brandishing an engagement ring.

As for the other relationships in The Big Bang Theory, the season eight finale promised some complications for everyone when the show returns for its ninth season.
